A Georgian Townhouse

Woodbridge, Suffolk

Project: A reception and living areas design refresh for a Georgian townhouse in Woodbridge, Suffolk.

Rooms: Entrance hall and staircase, study, WC/cloakroom, living room

Key brief elements: Inviting, welcoming, refined, cohesive, warm, flowing

Timeline: 6 months from first consultation to final installation and styling

A carefully considered interior design project for a Georgian townhouse in Woodbridge, Suffolk, focused on transforming the home's key reception spaces while celebrating its period character. Through a combination of bespoke design details, layered textures, and a timeless colour palette, I created elegant and welcoming interiors that feel both sophisticated and lived-in.

The client brief

For this townhouse project, the clients wanted to refresh the principal spaces within their Georgian townhouse, creating interiors that felt more cohesive, inviting, and reflective of their personal style. While they loved the property's architectural character, the existing rooms lacked warmth and a clear design direction.

The brief was to introduce a refined yet comfortable aesthetic that complemented the home's period features without feeling overly traditional. I focused on creating a sense of flow between the entrance hall, staircase, study, WC, and living room, using carefully selected colours, furnishings, lighting, and accessories to bring depth, personality, and balance to each space.

Particular attention was given to creating a welcoming first impression in the entrance hall, a functional yet stylish study, and a living room that felt elegant enough for entertaining while remaining comfortable for everyday use.

The design approach

My design approach centred around enhancing the townhouse's Georgian architecture while introducing contemporary elements that would stand the test of time. A layered palette of warm neutrals, earthy tones, and rich textures was used throughout the scheme, creating visual continuity between the spaces.

Bespoke furnishings, decorative lighting, and carefully curated accessories were selected to add character and sophistication, while thoughtful space planning ensured each room worked beautifully for modern living. The result is a collection of rooms that feel individually distinctive yet seamlessly connected.

One of my favourite design choices in this room is the wallpaper applied to the slanted ceiling. Often, these awkward angles can feel like overlooked or ‘dead’ spaces, but the Nina Campbell wallpaper transforms the area into a striking feature.

The delicate design, with its deer and botanical motifs, draws the eye upward and fills the room with character, interest, and lightness. Rather than trying to disguise the unusual architecture, the wallpaper celebrates it and creates a wonderfully immersive atmosphere.

Another element I particularly enjoyed working on was giving new life to antique furniture by incorporating it into bespoke fitted cabinetry. Carefully joining and adapting older pieces allowed their craftsmanship and history to be preserved while creating practical storage suited to the room.

Pairing these traditional elements with the whimsical wallpaper creates a balance between old and new. The historic character of the furniture is maintained, while the playful flora and fauna pattern introduces a fresh, unexpected twist that makes the space feel both timeless and personal.

The results

This project included concept development, space planning, sourcing, procurement, project coordination, installation, and final styling. Working closely with the clients throughout the process allowed us to deliver a cohesive scheme that respected the property's Georgian heritage while meeting the practical demands of modern living.

The transformed spaces now provide a warm and elegant backdrop for everyday life. The entrance hall and staircase create a striking first impression, the study offers a practical and inspiring workspace, the WC feels considered and luxurious, and the living room has become a comfortable yet sophisticated heart of the home.

Together, these spaces demonstrate how thoughtful interior design can elevate a property's existing character while making it more functional and enjoyable for modern living.
